The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner (IOSME) works closely with funeral homes to arrange for transport and funeral care for every decedent. IOSME staff are available to answer questions from families regarding the examination of their loved one. Please feel free to call with any questions or concerns.
The date of an autopsy depends on many factors, such as case complexity, caseload, and staffing availability. Please contact the IOSME prior to planning services.
Cremation permits are obtained electronically via the Iowa Vital Events System (IVES).
